Section Two – Beaver to S. Eisenhower Drive/I-64

***NOTICE*** Blasting operations have begun and will continue periodically throughout the project. These are low impact trench blasting operations as discussed at the public meeting on 10/1/2024. Reminder: Production Blasting Notice. For general concerns or comments for the Beaver to S. Eisenhower Section, contact Kanawha Stone โ€“ Beckley at 304-729-9310. The Beckley Z-Wayโ€™s Section Two includes a proposal by the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) to construct a new roadway relocating US-19 from just south of Airport Road in the vicinity of Old Crow Road to I-64 at the South Eisenhower Drive interchange.

Beckley is the Raleigh County Seat and a major center for residential, commercial, and tourism development in southern West Virginia. To some extent, the proposed project will relocate US-19 between Airport Road and I-64. The northern terminus is located at Interchange 124 on I-64. The southern terminus is located south of Airport Road and ties into the US-19 project from Shady Spring to Beaver.

The study area is approximately 1.91 miles long. This new three-lane alignment with two-way center turn lane will provide alternative traffic patterns for County Routes 9/8 (Skyline Drive) and 9/9 (Orchard Hill Road) but will provide direct connectivity for Orchard Hill Road to the relocated US-19. Airport Road will also be improved by adding a center turn lane to accommodate turning movements onto the new roadway.

Section Two will include:

  • 1.93 miles
  • 6,000 vehicles per day โ€“ Exit 124
  • 9,000 vehicles per day โ€“ Airport Road
  • New Roadway
  • Stream realignment

Updates and Traffic Expectations

(Posted 4/9/25) Traffic Advisory: Airport Road Lane Reduction and Overnight Closures. Please be advised that beginning at 7:00 PM on Monday, April 14, 2025, Airport Road will be reduced to a single lane, with possible intermittent full closures occurring throughout the overnight hours. These traffic impacts are necessary to allow the Contractor to install a new 24-inch waterline across Airport Road. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and remain alert when traveling through the construction zone. There will also be flagging operations on Whispering Pines Drive associated with the waterline relocation taking place across Airport Road. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this essential infrastructure improvement.
